What do you like about EDM compared to other technologies?

Compared to other technologies, EDM is valued for its ability to perform high-precision work with complex geometries on very hard materials, without creating mechanical stress on the part. Despite being a slower process than other technologies, such as traditional CNC machining, EDM is the best option in situations that require the creation of parts with fine or complex geometry, working with very hard materials, and the need for an impeccable, burr-free surface.

How do you see the future of EDM? What are the challenges?

I think the future of EDM is promising, driven by advancements in automation, artificial intelligence (AI), and sustainability, which expand its capabilities and efficiency. I expect the global EDM market to grow significantly, driven by the demand for complex, high-precision components in industries such as aerospace, defense, automotive, and medical devices.

EDM is a valuable technique for machining hard materials and complex shapes, but it faces several challenges. Limitations include the material removal rate, costs, and electrode wear.

What technologies do you think can be great allies for EDM in the future?

The main technologies I believe will be great allies for EDM in the future include artificial intelligence, hybrid manufacturing processes, the Internet of Things (IoT), and a focus on sustainability.

The fusion of EDM with other processes, such as laser technology, additive manufacturing (3D printing), or ultrasonic machining, allows for the creation of more complex geometries and the processing of new materials. Micro-EDM allows for the machining of extremely small features with high precision, which is fundamental for industries such as electronics, medical devices, and micro-tooling.

What emerging markets do you foresee in the world of EDM?

Based on market trends and growing demand, the emerging markets in the EDM sector, in my view, include Asia-Pacific (among these are China and India), Latin America (among these are Brazil and Mexico), and the Middle East and Africa.

These markets are driven by a growing demand for high-precision machining in industries such as automotive, aerospace, defense, electronics, and medical.

Do you remember a successful customer story that stood out to you?

For me, with all these years in the market, it is very difficult to choose just one success story with a client because, fortunately, I have had many. These experiences have turned into bonds of friendship and trust with all my clients.

Therefore, I consider my greatest success story to be having contributed to ONA becoming the main supplier of EDM machines in Portugal—a recognition that reflects the work, dedication, and mutual trust we have built over the years.

How many years have you been working at/with ONA?

I started working with ONA in 1989 and at ONA in 1991.

What is your role?

I am responsible for the ONA Delegation in Portugal and Galicia and for commercial support to Brazil.

What do you think makes ONA most characteristic and special?
